Sliding Rock

by Jason on Sep.21, 2006, under Outdoors, Work

When I was in North Carolina last October working on a film, the 6-day weeks were almost unbearably stressful. Luckily we were in a beautiful landscape of mountains and rivers, and lots of waterfalls. In fact, our base-camp town of Brevard, NC, is called the land of waterfalls.

One of these waterfalls is actually a smooth rock at a slope, forming a natural water slide. Keep in mind that we were in the mountains and it was October, so the water was quite cold. On one of our days off, I slid down the rock and instantly my stress, frustrations, and physical exhaustion were gone. It was the most amazing 3-second transformation that doesn’t have a parallel that I can imagine.

There needs to be a sliding rock in Los Angeles, because God knows there are many stressful situations here too. Although, somehow I think that part of the charm of Sliding Rock comes from the fact that it’s there naturally, and could have entertained centuries of settlers and Native Americans well before I took the plunge. Any recreation in Los Angeles would lack character, like the rest of the city.

I knew I was on to something when I built my brick pizza oven. Turns out pizza helps prevent cancer.

Trans-fat

Part 2 of 5 in the series "Brick Oven"

I think I’m going to go on a health food kick. At least an unprocessed, cook-it-yourself kick. One reason is because I recently went to Urth Cafe and had some soup and salad and was very surprised at the home-cookedness of the cuisine.

The other reason is this article. If I’m going to live with a body worth living in, I should eat more good food. I declare, this post does seem rather preachy…

UPDATE: The Weston A. Price Foundation website has a wealth of fair information about health. Started by a doctor who studied the health and diets of non-industrialized, primative cultures. Very informative.
